Ibibio idiok masks represent destructive spirits or the spirits of ancestors who violated tradition during their lifetime. Idiok masks are designed to inspire both fear and respect. During mask performances of the Ekpo society, reincarnated immoral ancestors are represented by idiok masks with dark surfaces and various disfigurations.
